Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala has told Parliament that investigations are underway into individuals suspected of spreading hate speech through fake social media accounts.
He said the Computer Crimes Investigation Division is investigating several incidents involving hateful content targeting different communities.
The Minister revealed that investigators had identified individuals both in Sri Lanka and abroad who are suspected of disseminating such content using fake accounts.
However, he said investigations conducted so far had found no evidence of an organised group targeting any specific community.
He added that authorities are closely examining several incidents and have submitted relevant information to the courts as part of the ongoing investigations.
