The Parliamentary Select Committee investigating the release of 323 shipping containers from the Colombo Port without mandatory physical inspection has concluded its inquiry and is preparing its final report. The report is expected to be presented to Parliament in the coming weeks.
Speaking to the media, a committee member said a specific date for presenting the report had not yet been decided, although the investigation had been completed.
The member added that a draft report would first be circulated among committee members, and the final version would be prepared after incorporating their recommendations.
The incident has raised concerns about customs clearance procedures and oversight mechanisms at Sri Lanka Customs and port operations. Whistleblowers and opposition MPs questioned how containers potentially carrying high-risk or restricted goods were released without the required physical inspections.
They alleged that several containers classified under the “red” and “yellow” categories, which require mandatory scanning and physical inspections, had been released under suspicious circumstances.
