Government Plans to Establish New CPC Fuel Stations, Minister Says

October 11, 2026

Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka says the government is taking steps to establish additional fuel stations operated by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to address the ongoing fuel supply issues in the country.

Speaking to the media in Colombo, the Minister said private fuel suppliers had significantly reduced their supplies to the market due to difficulties in covering operational losses.

In response, the CPC increased its share of the fuel supplied to the market from 55% to 80% to reduce the impact on consumers, he said.

The Minister acknowledged the difficulties faced by private suppliers and urged them to remain patient until the current crisis subsides, adding that they would then have the opportunity to continue their businesses while earning a reasonable profit.

He also said the government hopes to establish new fuel stations in the future to minimise difficulties faced by consumers during similar fuel crises.
