Ravi Karunanayake, Member of Parliament and former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), has questioned the government about its plans and available alternatives for addressing Sri Lanka’s economic challenges after the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programme ends.
Karunanayake asked whether the government had held discussions with the IMF regarding a possible future programme beyond the current arrangement.
He also sought details about the financial provisions, conditions, social protection measures and steps planned to ensure debt sustainability under any future arrangement.
Furthermore, the MP called on the government to present a comparative assessment to Parliament of the available alternatives to IMF assistance, particularly if it intends to avoid further IMF support to reduce external influence on the country’s economic policy.
