Ravi Karunanayake, Member of Parliament and former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), has warned that rising pension expenditure could create a significant long-term financial burden for Sri Lanka.
Citing official government statistics, Karunanayake said pension expenditure had increased by Rs. 7 billion this year compared with 2025.
He further noted that pension costs are projected to double within the next 12 years, placing additional pressure on government finances.
Describing the situation as a “pension time bomb”, the MP warned that the government would need to find additional funds to meet future pension obligations.
Speaking to the media, he stressed the importance of developing a long-term plan to manage rising pension costs and prevent further pressure on public finances.
