An Indian navy speedboat collided with a ferry carrying over 100 people to a popular tourist destination off Mumbai on Wednesday, resulting in at least 13 deaths, according to the navy.
The navy’s statement revealed that 99 ferry passengers were rescued after the speedboat, which was undergoing engine tests, lost control and crashed into the ferry, named Neelkamal. The crash occurred as the speedboat circled the ferry on its way to Elephanta Island.
The fatalities included one navy personnel and two others aboard a navy craft.
The tourists, who were en route to the Elephanta Caves, a famous site known for its Hindu temples and mythology-themed images, were rescued by navy and civilian boats. They were transferred to nearby jetties and hospitals. Four helicopters and 11 naval crafts were involved in the operation.
The Elephanta Caves, located on Elephanta Island, are a popular attraction near Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment hub.
