Dr. Deepal Perera, Consultant Paediatrician at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, has raised concern over a rise in infectious diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and influenza among children.
He noted that the surge in dengue and chikungunya cases is largely due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, which have contributed to an increase in mosquito breeding grounds.
Dr. Perera emphasized the urgent need to eliminate mosquito breeding sites in order to curb the spread of these vector-borne diseases. He revealed that a significant number of children showing symptoms of dengue and chikungunya have recently been admitted to the hospital.
“Dengue can be life-threatening, while chikungunya can result in prolonged joint pain that may persist for months after the infection,” he cautioned.
He also highlighted that chikungunya poses serious risks to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and the elderly. In some cases, the virus can even affect unborn babies if the mother becomes infected.
In addition to vector-borne illnesses, Dr. Perera warned of a noticeable increase in influenza cases. He urged the public to remain vigilant, as the illness spreads rapidly among children, particularly in schools and childcare settings.
