Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court Orders Arrest of Jaffna District MP on Obstruction Charges

The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court has ordered the arrest of Jaffna District MP Archchuna Ramanathan on charges of obstructing police duties in the Rambewa area.

According to Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga, legal action has been initiated against the MP following an incident where his vehicle, equipped with unauthorized VIP lights, was stopped by traffic officers. A viral video of the incident shows the MP refusing to cooperate with the officers.

SSP Manatunga stated that an investigation was conducted by the Anuradhapura Police, which reported the MP’s alleged violations under Sections 183 and 344 of the Penal Code and the Motor Traffic Act to the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court.

The court has ordered the MP’s arrest and instructed further investigations, with progress to be reported on February 3, 2025.
