Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today (24) that tomorrow’s proceedings will demonstrate the unity of the Government’s 158 MPs, rejecting speculation about divisions within the parliamentary group.
Speaking during the debate on the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill, the Prime Minister said the Government MPs were guided by a collective objective rather than individual interests.
“By 7 p.m. tomorrow, we will be able to see what the situation in this Parliament is. Tomorrow, we will be able to see the unity of these 158 members,” she said.
Amarasuriya acknowledged that various claims about the Government’s parliamentary group were circulating but said the unity among the 158 MPs had “not been shaken even by the slightest degree.”
She said tomorrow evening would show how the group’s collective approach would contribute to what she described as the country’s ongoing transformation.
The Prime Minister also said public confidence in the possibility of building a better Sri Lanka was growing. Referring to a recent railway strike, she said some young people who had been unable to purchase tickets during the strike bought two tickets the following day to compensate for their previous journey.
“It may be a small gesture, but it is a belief that this country can be better,” she said.
She added that this growing hope included expectations for a better public service, leaders with integrity, public institutions that respond to citizens, and an independent and fair judiciary.
Amarasuriya described this growing public confidence as an important source of strength for the Government’s efforts to transform the country.
