Authorities have decided to temporarily suspend the route permits of buses found to be operating on kerosene instead of diesel.
The decision follows a special night-time inspection conducted jointly by the National Transport Commission (NTC) and the vehicle emission testing programme at the Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal in Colombo.
During the inspection, officials assessed the roadworthiness and exhaust emissions of the buses. Maintenance orders were issued to 39 of the 59 buses inspected.
The special night-time operation targeted buses that avoid routine inspections by not operating during the day.
Meanwhile, the vehicle emission testing programme conducted another special inspection yesterday to assess the roadworthiness of buses operating in the Kilinochchi area.
Officials said similar special inspections will continue to identify buses that are unfit for operation, with the aim of improving passenger safety and protecting the environment.
