Former Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, has been summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement regarding the death of a police sergeant attached to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) in a 2023 shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara.
A CID senior official confirmed that Alles has been asked to appear tomorrow (31) amid suspicions that he may have relevant information regarding the case.
Meanwhile, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon remains remanded in connection with the incident.
The shooting occurred on December 31, 2023, in front of the W15 Hotel in Pelena, Weligama, resulting in the death of the CCD officer. Recently, the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered the arrest of eight police officers, including then Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, in relation to the case.
