The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the ‘Thriposha’ Company in Kandana as a state-owned institution, announcing plans for its renovation and development to better address the nutritional needs of the population.
This decision was made during a meeting on January 4, chaired by Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, focusing on the company’s current operations and future strategies.
Minister Jayatissa criticized previous administrations for failing to implement a formal, targeted program for the company, which he said deprived the public of its full potential benefits. He assured that the government is dedicated to transforming the Thriposha Company into a thriving entity capable of tackling national nutritional challenges effectively.
Rather than liquidating the institution, the government plans to implement a structured development strategy to ensure the company’s profitability and sustainability. This initiative aims to enhance the company’s capacity to support the nation’s nutritional requirements while fostering long-term growth.
A key element of the development plan is building partnerships with local farmers and entrepreneurs. The company will establish a continuous procurement system to source maize and soy locally, thereby boosting agricultural development and fostering a symbiotic relationship with the farming community.
Additionally, the financial performance of the company has been notable. During the meeting, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development received Rs. 11 million as part of the 30% dividend for the audited financial year 2023. The total dividend, exceeding Rs. 165 million, was officially presented to the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Enterprises, Mrs. N.J. Pathirana.
This move reflects the government’s broader vision of leveraging state-owned enterprises to address social challenges while ensuring financial accountability and sustainability.
